This day programme commences at Periyar where the Kalypso representative will meet you. The cycling will begin after a short briefing by the representative regarding the cycles and the route. The ride passes through cardamom estates and spice gardens that have together made these cardamom Hills world famous. Pedal towards the famed Periyar Tiger Reserve on narrow winding roads of the aptly named Cardamom hills and be treated to magical experience of luxuriant forests and the breath-taking, vast stretches of spice plantations. The name Cardamom Hills is derived from the spice itself which is grown over large areas here due to the cool climates. This is a great opportunity to learn about the local spices and to see the processes behind its cultivation and its final journey to the markets. The Periyar forest reserve and the cardamom hills are also ecologically sensitive regions and are therefore largely protected against human habitation. You will spot lot of butterflies, giant squirrels, variety of birds and macaque while cycling through the country side and local villages and towards the end you can taste the spiced tea from local tea shops. The Periyar Tiger Reserve is widely acclaimed for its rich treasures of flora and fauna. The evergreen forests support a vast number of medicinal plants and are home to moist deciduous forests. On the southern hilltops of the Cardamom Hill ranges flourish the tropical evergreen forests. Sighting elephants in the wild will remain a cherished memory.
